Assignment 2.3. Synthesis

The use of robotics in todays society is not as big of a deal as you might think. In 2012 is is EXPECTED to have robotics to aid the people of the world. Movies like Iron Man and technological advancements with the internet(social media) and advancements in warfare like heat seeking missiles,  isn’t a big shock. The world today expects technologies like mine sweeping robots. People believe that all ships and submarines should have a remote control robot to sweep the area around them in order to protect themselves their families. YET, the technology is groundbreaking. The algorithms used within the robot to avoid the propellers of a ship and still survey the area from lethal or hazardous materials its remarkable. Not many may appreciate what these researchers from MIT have done but thanks to them many lives have been saved.

Assignment 2.2 Analysis

First Article Summary:

Title: ‘Robotics in hazardous environments–real deployments by the savannah river national laboratory’

This article talks about the advantages of having robots to complete hazardous jobs such as surveying demolished buildings due to fire, natural disasters, or war. The article isn’t just talking about how robots are the best way to go about it. The article talks about how previous robots have failed to work in a disastrous situation and offers a solution incase of another situation in which it will be needed.

Second Article Summary:

Title: ‘Mine sweeper’
By: McCracken, Erin

This article talks about

An underwater vehicle that is remote-controlled, and can pick up objects with sonar imaging ,it send photos and video back to the ship. It’s also what the navy uses to detect naval mines. The article shows the technologies that the Royal Canadian Navy has in its fleet. This technology has been shared with 15 different fleets.

Analysis:

Both articles agree that the use of robotics in hazardous situations is where the future is leading. Not many can argue that technology towards safety of human life is wrong. But, the first article ”Robotics in hazardous environments’ points out the flaws in these ‘safety’ technologies. The flaws which have shown the defects and faults of the design and the use of these specific robots. The second article just generally states what the ships of the RCN can do and what it is used for. This technology they talk about is the same that was created by the team of scientists and researchers in Assignment 2.1.

Both articles infer that robotics in hazardous or even medical situations are the FUTURE.

Assignment 2.1 Summary

Topic: Robotics

SUMMARY

‘Robotic brooms’ was the article i read.

In the article Franz Hover, mechanical engineering professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, got together with a group of scientists/researchers created an algorithm for a robot to successfully sweep a ship and even go through the propellers of the ship and survey the 10m area around the ship for mines left at sea. The mines can range through many different sizes, anywhere from the size of a boulders to the size of an iPod. A break through in robotics at sea.

SEO

01: How do search engines index webpages?

They follow a set of rules, known as an algorithm. One of the main rules in a ranking algorithm involves the location and frequency of keywords on a web page. Pages with the search terms appearing in the HTML title tag are often assumed to be more relevant than others to the topic, so they are the higher ranked websites. (Depending on the key words/tags)

02: Do ip addresses affect search engine ranking, why/how?

Yes, ip addresses do affect search engine ranking. If a website has a common ip address that is shared with other websites it becomes “watered down” the result and your web ranking will be lowered in a search. If the website had a “dedicated ip address” the ranking will be higher in a search as well as the speed of the site.

“Depending on the web hosting provider and/or shared hosting plan, a website will often share an IP address with thousands of other websites.

it is widely speculated that websites with shared IP addresses will rank lower on search engines than websites with a dedicated IP.”

Web Literacy

Web Literacy is basically  finding out how credible your sources are from the World Wide Web.The big “www.” where (Im going to estimate here) 87% of our information comes from. Whenever you have a question no one can solve the first thing anyone would do would be to ‘Google’ it.

I love Google<3

The key words you are looking for are ‘.edu , .gov,’ Also looking into how the site is rated, how long it has been up, who the authors are etc.

Stay safe and happy web surfing kids 😉

Self Directed Learning

SDL. Basic translation? Teaching yourself.

Its a skill everyone possesses… Its just the matter of how much they can handle at a time. Everyone has the ability to teach themselves how to do something. Determination is KEY!

Honestly i think SDL is one of the best ways to learn. You will actually remember what your doing… Its not reading from a manual. Its from attempting and eventually finishing what you start. Ive learned how to use Adobe Illustrator (ALL alone) as well as other programs and i think ive got down on LLLLLOCK (excuse my slang)

EXERCISE: HTML 5 – 102

How can you use images in css, show us examples?

Follow the coding.

Example for a background Image:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<style type=”text/css”>
body
{
background-image:url(‘paper.gif’);
background-color:#cccccc;
}
</style>
</head>

<body>
<h1>Hello World!</h1>
</body>

</html>

For a z-index picture:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<style type=”text/css”>
img
{
position:absolute;
left:0px;
top:0px;
z-index:-1;
}
</style>
</head>

</html>

(Having the ‘z-index’ at ‘-1’ allows the picture to be behind text. ‘1’ would be above the text.

Time Management

OMG. My worst enemy… Time management.

I need a professional to set up my days … I CANT MANAGE! Family, friends, school, work, gym, Other… Its is defiantly something i need to work on. I have tried so many times to better my time management skills… I have seen improvement on managing my time, but somehow i lose sight of my goals. Time management is something i will have to improve on to be better at .. well .. everything.

Inshallah

Participation

Participation is KEY. If i have the answer and i’m confident in it i will gladly step up and speak up, but i do not like to assume or infer or give a vague response to a topic im unfamiliar with. I like to know what im talking about if im going to share my thoughts out loud and out to people.

If a student(Me) is interested. The student(Me) will participate.

Like i said. Participation is key, if you know what your saying.

Im going to end in a quote that doesn’t mean anything:

“I dont make up the rules, I just think them up and write them down” – Eric Cartman

Problem Solving

Problem solving… another word for that would be… “LIFE”. Dealing with unpredictable situations and unknown times. To be honest i’m always going to think i have the answers to everything!

My mentality and self confidence is way higher than is should be. Im a true weirdo. I can be obnoxious or i can be silent. But whatever mood i’m in i WILL find the answer to my problem. Also i work at McDonalds so to me that means i’m ready for the apocalypse, WW3, alien invasion ANYTHING.
